What is the Macula?
The Macula is a highly pigmented region near the centre of the retina. It contains a high concentration of photoreceptor cells, which are responsible for visual sharpness, and a high concentration of carotenoid pigments which are thought to have a protective effect on the photoreceptors.

Saffron, the dried stigma of the crocus flower, is a spice, which is commonly used in Mediterranean culinary recipes. Its bitter taste comes from the unique chemicals and antioxidants it contains; picrocrocin, safranal and carotenoid crocin.
